What Does my Brain Have to do with my Back?

Back pain Linked to Brain Changes
BBC News
Scientists in Germany add to the growing body of research that chronic pain is associated with physical changes in the brain.

Chronic Back Pain Comes From the Brain
“Shrinking Brain Tissue,” ABC News 12/28/2005 Amanda Onion
Brain scan tech shows chronic pain leads to brain tissue “shrinkage” About 1.5cc’s of brain volume loss for every year of chronic pain. Researchers say targeting circuitry may be a new, more effective approach to treating chronic pain and are looking at targeting pathways in the brain to halt signals from firing in the first place.

Chronic Pain Harms the Brain’s Wiring
U.S. News and World Report 2/8/2008
Constant firing of neurons can cause permanent damage and forever change the brain’s wiring.

Chronic Pain Shrinks the ‘Thinking Parts’ of the Brain
Northwestern University 11/23/2004, Elizabeth Crown
Loss of brain density is related to pain duration, shrinking the brain by 11%–equivalent to 10-20 years of normal aging. This research supported by grants from the NINDS and the NIH and published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Accelerated Brain Loss in Fibromyalgia Patients
The Journal of Neuroscience April 11, 2007

A study in the Journal of Neuroscience has reported that the longer you have fibromyalgia, the faster your brain dies, each year suffering 9.5 times more the loss of brain tissue than in normal aging!

Fibromyalgia Can No Longer Be Called the” Invisible Syndrome.”
Journal of Nuclear Medicine, November 2008
Using computed tomography (SPECT), researchers were able to detect functional abnormalities in certain regions in the brains of patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia, reinforcing the idea that symptoms of the disorder are related to a dysfunction in those parts of the brain where pain is processed.

Fibromyalgia Pain Caused by Neuron Mismatch, Suggests Study
ScienceDaily Nov. 2, 2007
The unexplained pain experienced by patients with fibromyalgia is the result of a mismatch between sensory and motor systems, new research suggests.

Fibromyalgia:  The Misunderstood Disease
Science Daily, June 2, 2007
“I was told they didn’t know what was wrong with me; the blood tests came back good, x-rays came back clear,” she says. “They had no idea and they’d shuffle me to another doctor, another specialist.” She saw rheumatologists, neurologists, internists, and blood specialists, but there was still no answer. Extreme fatigue, recurring headaches, chest pains, stomach and intestinal problems, muscle fatigue and weakness, restricted mobility, and anxiety. At her worst point, Josephine was bed-ridden and medicated to the point that she wasn’t functioning due to the pain.
